First Aid FAQ

What is First Aid?

The First Aid course teaches individuals how to recognize and respond to common injuries and medical emergencies until professional help arrives. Participants learn essential first aid skills for situations such as bleeding, burns, fractures, allergic reactions, and sudden illness. The course is designed for workplace responders, community members, and anyone who wants to be prepared to help in an emergency.

Who should take First Aid?

The First Aid course is designed for individuals with little or no medical training who need first aid certification for their job, workplace requirements, or personal preparedness. It is ideal for teachers, childcare providers, coaches, fitness instructors, construction workers, security personnel, workplace safety teams, and anyone who wants to be prepared to respond to emergencies.

How long is the First Aid certificate valid for?

First Aid certifications typically last for two years. After this period, individuals are required to take a recertification course to renew their certification

What topics are covered in First Aid?

The course covers first aid basics, medical and injury emergencies, bleeding control, burns, fractures, allergic reactions, environmental emergencies, poisoning, bites and stings, and other common situations where immediate first aid care may be needed.

Is There a Written Exam in the First Aid Online Course?

No. The First Aid course does not include a written exam. Participants are evaluated through course activities and skills practice to ensure they can recognize emergencies and perform first aid skills effectively. Upon successful completion, students receive a Health & Safety Institute (HSI) First Aid course completion card valid for 2 years.

Can I Take First Aid Online Only?

No. To receive a Health & Safety Institute (HSI) First Aid certification, students must complete both the required online coursework and an instructor-led skills session. The online portion allows students to learn the course material at their own pace, while the in-person session provides hands-on practice and skills evaluation.

My Employer Says I Can't Take an Online Class. Will This Course Meet the Requirement?

In most cases, yes. This First Aid course follows the Heatlh & Safety Institute’s blended learning format, which combines online coursework with an in-person skills session conducted by an HSI instructor. Students must successfully complete both portions to receive an official Health & Safety Institute First Aid course completion card.

Many employers accept HSI blended learning courses because they include hands-on skills practice and evaluation. However, requirements can vary by employer or licensing agency, so we recommend confirming acceptance with your employer before registering.

Do You Offer a Fully In-Person First Aid Only Course?

At this time, we only offer First Aid in the Health & Safety Institute’s blended learning format, which includes online coursework followed by an in-person skills session.

If you are looking for a fully instructor-led, in-person option, consider our CPR AED & First Aid combination course. This course is completed entirely in person and does not require any online coursework.

Upon successful completion of either course format, students receive an official Health & Safety Institute (HSI) course completion card valid for 2 years.
