For both basic and advanced healthcare providers who work around pediatric patients frequently, PEARS focuses heavily on learning the pediatric assessment triangle and systematic approach to identify and stabilize various medical emergencies.

The AHA PEARS Course is a specialized training program designed to equip healthcare providers with the essential skills to assess, recognize, and stabilize pediatric patients in emergency situations. Developed by the American Heart Association, this comprehensive course focuses on improving pediatric assessment and intervention techniques, empowering participants to become heroes for children in critical need. Upon completion of this course, student will receive a PEARS certification from the AHA that is valid for 2 years.

  1. Key signs and symptoms for strokes and heart attacks.
  2. The BLS Survey.
  3. CPR for Adult, Child and Infant.
  4. Various techniques of providing ventilations.
  5. AED operations and precautions.
  6. Choking identification and management.
  7. Team dynamics.

What is PEARS?

Who should take a PEARS class?

PEARS is designed for healthcare providers such as nurses, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) who may be involved in the care of pediatric patients in emergency situations.

How long is a PEARS certification valid?

PEARS certifications typically last for two years. After this period, individuals need to take a recertification course to renew their certification.

Is there a pre-requisite for taking a PEARS class?

While there is no specific pre-requisite, participants are generally expected to have a basic understanding of life support principles.

What topics are covered in a PEARS class?

PEARS covers a range of topics including pediatric assessment, recognition of respiratory distress and failure, shock, cardiac arrest, and the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) in pediatric patients.

How is PEARS different from PALS?

 PEARS is designed for healthcare providers who infrequently see critically ill pediatric patients, whereas PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) is more comprehensive and intended for those who frequently care for pediatric patients in emergency situations.

Is PEARS training available online?

Some components of PEARS training may be available online, but most courses also require an in-person skills session for hands-on practice and assessment.

Can non-healthcare professionals take the PEARS course?

While PEARS is primarily designed for healthcare providers, non-healthcare professionals who may be involved in the care of pediatric patients in emergency situations can also benefit from taking the course.
